Question: How often do u talk about science ?

I share an office with 7 other PhD students, so we usually talk about our research with each other every day.
(we also talk about a lot of things that AREN’T related to our research, like lunch, TV shows, politics. We talk a lot actually…).

Our supervisor (like our teacher) comes in to our office most days, and we talk about our work with her. We also have formal meetings with her every month to update her on where our research is going, what we’ve found out this month, if we’re having any troubles or difficulties with the work, etc.

Talking to OTHER people about my work happens usually 4-5 times a year if I’m lucky. I can go to conferences with lots of other people who are researching similar things to me, and we can all talk about each other’s work, give ideas, criticism, inspiration; it’s great fun! Usually you take along a poster that shows your work so that other people can get a quick idea of what you’re doing (because everything it better with pictures), but if you’re lucky you might be asked to give a presentation where you stand up in front of everyone and talk about your work with a slideshow to help you.

Also in the autumn I help teach undergraduate students in some experimental labs in the university, so in autumn I’m talking about science an extra 4 hours a week.
