This is probably the most common questions asked by people about evolutionary science, and has caused a lot of philosophical and scientific debate.

The simple answer: The egg came first, because the chicken evolved over time from birds. Some scientists says they don’t know because mankind did not observe this phenomenon.

The main thing to take away from this is that scientists are still finding out about the wonders of life here on earth and in the universe.

Chickens (as we know them) evolved slowly over time from wild junglefowls so it is really really hard to say exactly when the first chicken existed. But the junglefowls that came before chickens had eggs, so I guess you could say that the egg came first. But it depends what you mean by and egg. So you mean a chicken egg? in which case, as with the chicken, it is impossible to say when the first one existed. Or do you mean any old egg? in which case the egg certainly came first.

As with all hard questions. The important thing is to ask – why is this question hard. In this case it is because the question doesn’t quite make clear what is meant by an “egg” or by a “chicken”.

And now my head really hurts. Can we have some easier questions please 🙂

Yes I agree- the egg must have come first because the chick in the egg will have evolved from parents who were not quite chickens yet!
